01

Robot Operating System: ROS & ROS 2

ROS is a software development kit that helps you build robot applications. From drivers to state-of-the-art algorithms, and with powerful developer tools, ROS has what you need for your next robotics project including integration with Gazebo. And it’s all open source.

It has become the defacto standard for robotics interoperability around the world, allowing mobile bases, arms, cameras, sensors, and algorithms from different vendors to communicate seamlessly together.

ROS Noetic reached EOL (End of Life) in May 2025. The recommendation is to transition to ROS 2, Humble or Jazzy are good candidates as they are LTS (long time support distributions).

ROS 2 code is licensed under Apache 2.0 License. It allows permissive use of the software, without implications on the user’s intellectual property.

We can help you to:
Design and architect your robotic system
Design a Migration plan from ROS 1 to ROS 2
Improve software quality with best practices and test
02

Simulation

We are simulation believers! The ability to quickly iterate, validate, explore and test your code in virtual environments reduces implementation time, cost and risk. Simulation is not a replacement for field testing but, in the era of professional software development, simulation is critical to success.

The Honu team has many years of experience with robotics simulations in a variety of domains from outer space to deep. In fact, we’re actual Gazebo core developers and have experience with other simulators (like Nvidia Isaac Sim).

Let us know if you need:
A simulation environment for your robotic platform
A new feature for your current simulation
Help upstreaming your existing simulation codebase to a simulation project
Help with the design of your future simulation architecture
03

Robotics Infrastructure

At Honu we are unconditional believers that the development and production of robotics applications and robotics simulations must rely on having a robust and efficient software infrastructure.

We have decades of experience on setting up, optimizing and maintaining multiple infrastructure setups that goes from the configuration of the

development tools and processes (robotics frameworks, compilers tools, development platforms, etc.) passing through designing and enhancing existing testing solutions (testing frameworks for robotics and simulations, automate CI solutions, etc.) until the release and deployment of robotics programs (packaging and code delivery).

We can help you with:
Deliver software solutions: packaging for different operating systems or customizing existing packages.
Setup, fine-tuning or speed-up an automated continuous integration or other testing systems.
Optimize the robotics development environments and tools. Cloud based or local systems.
04

Competitions

Robotic competitions are a proven method of driving innovation in new areas that present grand challenges.  Competitions codify the needs of nascent areas where robotics can have an important impact, providing the foundation for new research and applied solutions.

Our team has developed and hosted programs in a variety of domains including disaster-response, space robotics, factory automation and ocean autonomy.  Our team can lend that experience and expertise to your field.

05

UAVs

ROS is a general purpose robotics library that can be used with any type of robot. In particular it allows you to create powerful drone applications. We are well known users of PX4 and Ardupilot.

We can provide end-to-end testing services for your UAV platform and subsytems in simulation, ensuring your aircraft’s success under real world conditions.

We have extensive experience with Gazebo to create and simulate UAV and environmental models and to undertake software-in-the-loop (SITL) testing.

Marine Robotics

The marine environment presents unique challenges for robotic applications. Ocean waves, wind, and lighting conditions on the surface necessitate advanced solutions within the technology stack, including perception, control, and navigation. In the deep ocean, the absence of RF, optical, and lidar signals requires the integration of innovative perception and navigation modalities.

The Honu team excels in developing simulation (digital twin) solutions and conducting field deployments of ocean robotics above, on, and below the ocean surface.

VRX and VORC: Comprehensive unmanned surface vessel (USV) simulation environments and associated Office of Naval Research (ONR) virtual marine robotic competitions.
Dave: A specialized virtual solution for deep-sea remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) and autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs), designed to support sonar-based perception for autonomous manipulation in subsea environments.
GFOE Work: The Global Foundation for Ocean Exploration (GFOE) specializes in designing, building, and operating advanced robotic platforms that explore some of the most extreme underwater environments on Earth. For over a decade, we’ve partnered with GFOE, supporting their remotely operated underwater and surface vehicle software development through simulations and at-sea operations.
